A practical buying guide to the S17 Anthology soft cover: what the Stockholm17 anthology book contains, who it suits, and when the hard cover makes more sense.
Quick answer
Choose the S17 Anthology soft cover if you want the full 2013–2023 Stockholm17 design story at a lower price and plan to read it rather than display it as a shelf object. Choose the hard cover instead if long-term durability and a collector-grade binding matter more to you than saving money.
What the soft cover actually is
The S17 Anthology soft cover is the paperback edition of Stockholm17's 2013–2023 retrospective. It is a thick, image-led book about the creative process behind a decade of custom playing card design, not a price guide or a catalog of every deck ever released.
That distinction matters for expectations. If you want process sketches, design decisions, and the story of how decks move from idea to print, this is the right book. If you want a reference table of market values, this is not that.
Soft cover versus hard cover: the real trade-off
The content is the same decade-long story; the difference is the binding and how the book holds up. A soft cover is lighter and easier to read at a desk or carry to a meetup, but the cover and spine show wear sooner if the book lives in a bag or gets pulled off the shelf often.
The hard cover is the better long-term display object and the safer choice for a collection that will be handled by guests or stored upright for years. The soft cover is the better choice for readers who care about the contents more than the cover material.
How to judge value before you buy
Compare the soft cover price against what you would pay for the hard cover edition, not against the list price of a different product. The soft cover is currently listed at USD 53.55 with a catalog comparison price of USD 85.00, so the discount is meaningful only if the soft cover format genuinely fits how you will use the book.
Do not buy the soft cover expecting hard cover durability, and do not buy the hard cover expecting extra chapters. Decide which format matches your reading and storage habits first, then compare prices within that format.
Decision rules for the S17 Anthology soft cover
- If you plan to read it cover to cover: Buy the soft cover. It delivers the same 2013–2023 Stockholm17 design narrative in a lighter, lower-priced format.
- If the book will sit on open display: Choose the hard cover instead. A soft cover spine and corners are more likely to scuff and bend when handled or moved often. Display conditions are the deciding factor, not the page count.
- If you are buying for a casual gift: The soft cover is the safer gift because the lower price reduces risk if the recipient is not already a dedicated playing card collector.
- If you already own the hard cover: Do not buy the soft cover for the content alone; the decade-long story is the same. Buy it only if you want a separate reading copy.
